The construction industry continues to be one of the largest growing and male dominated sectors in Ireland. The purpose of this study was to identify and examine the issues relating to attracting women to the construction industry, retaining and promoting women working in the industry and key initiatives from leading construction organisations and the Irish government, to promote gender equality for both men and women in the industry. The methodology included a qualitative study with key stakeholders. Key findings of issues included early career choices amongst young females, the male dominated culture and image of the industry, long working hours conflicting with family commitments and the need for radical improvements to flexible working options, career development and mentoring programs.
